Our Odessa Boy Scouts prove themselves in an environment that challenges their courage and tests their nerve. After they’ve been given the proper guidance from those with experience and know-how, they take their own lead, going places they’ve never gone, seeing things they’ve never seen, and diving into the rugged world of outdoor adventure, relying on teamwork and character to accomplish what everyone else thinks is impossible.

Sound fun? If you’re a boy age 11, or at least 10 and have completed the fifth grade, or have earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Award, to 17 years old, the time for a real adventure is now.

Cub Scout Day Camp

The theme for the 2011 Cub Scout Day Camp program is “Cub Quest.”

Council and District staffs are currently planning the programs for the thousands of Cub Scouts who will attend camp in the Heart of America Council. These Tigers and Wolf Scouts shoot BB guns and bows and arrows; work on badges and Cub Scout belt loops; cook out; sing songs; learn about nature; make crafts; and play games. If you have not made plans to attend, you should! Going to camp is a wonderful part of the Cub Scouting experience, and it helps your pack earn Scouting’s Journey to Excellence and Summertime Pack Awards. The Pack must provide leadership and adult supervision for their Cub Scouts who attend Day Camp, plus provide for transportation to and from the camps. It is recommended that packs have at least one registered adult leader attend camp for every five to six Cub Scouts. The minimum number allowed at any time is two, of which one of them must have completed Youth Protection Training. Everyone must complete parts A and B of the Annual Health and Medical Record.

A Trading Post is available at camp from which souvenirs can be purchased. Camp takes place rain or shine, is easy to sign up for, provide a lifetime of treasured memories and is very inexpensive.

Who Can Attend? Any registered Cub Scout (including kindergarten graduates) may attend day camp.

What Time Do They Start?

Most day camp programs start around 9:00 a.m. and end around 3:00 p.m. each day. They usually run for three to five days in a row. Your district will provide a Walking Leader’s Guide for your adults, which will have specific schedule of times and programs. If you do not know what district you are in or are unable to reach your district’s day camp director, please contact the Heart of America Council at 816-942-9333 or 800-776-1110. They will put you in touch with the District Executive serving day camp in your area.

Registration Form – please register as a pack beginning January 4, 2011!

Not too many things last 100 years. Some buildings do. Fewer people do. And this year the Boy Scouts are celebrating 100 years of excellence in service. The founding of the Boy Scouts in England by Lord Baden Powell, the Scouts have had a profound influence all over the world by helping young boys become young men (and unbeknownst to all but a very few, the real reason my son’s name is Powell). The best of those young men achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Of which I am proud to be one of.

The lesson for us in the Performance Marketing Industry is that short term gains do not provide security, nor longevity. Excellence in what we do, does. How about we take a couple examples of some Scouts who by their striving for excellence in their own professions, have made their mark and have achieved both personal and financial success. Which by no fluke marked their own young lives by becoming Eagle Scouts (less than 4% of all Scouts achieve this honor btw.).

Mike Rowe – Famous as a champion of hard working people with his own pursuit of “Dirty Jobs”.

Sam Walton – Founder of Wal-Mart.

Neil Armstrong – World Record Setting pilot in the X-15 program and First Man on the Moon.

Gerald Ford – 38th President of the United States.

J. Willard Marriott, Jr. – President of Marriott Hotels.

This short list is representative of the majority of Eagle Scouts in our midst. In business, government, media, and other pursuits they stand out because of the things they learned in Scouts. To do their Best. To do their Duty. For their God and their Country. High standards indeed.

All too often we chat amongst each other about the scammers, spammers, and the cheats in our industry. Perhaps it’s time we raise each other up to a higher level and praise achievement, success, excellence, honesty, integrity, and the generosity that the best in our industry have to offer. And share these accolades with our customers, friends, other industries.

And by building on our excellence over time, perhaps we will one day celebrate a century of excellence. Much like the well deserved accolades we owe Scouting today.
